Venture to the tip of the Giant’s Causeway

Venture to the tip of the Giant’s Causeway…or maybe just stop a few metres from there to avoid the crashing waves.

This natural wonder is made up of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns stretching out into the sea, the result of a volcanic fissure eruption around 50 to 60 million years ago. According to Irish legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill after he was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet.

The naturally-hewn rocky steps to the aisle of the Causeway.

Today, you can make your way down the black hexagonal stones of the Causeway and peer out past the sea to see if you can glimpse Scotland through the fog. This amazing convergence of land and sea is definitely not to be missed if you find yourself in Northern Ireland.
